Join the fashionably-conscious and artistically-aware crowd even if you missed the recent Art Basel Hong Kong. To celebrate 40 years of MCM (Modern Creation München), the German luxury accessories house has got German contemporary artist Tobias Rehberger to design a special collection that captures the brand’s bold and dynamic characteristic.
MCM x Tobias Rehberger.
Famously known for his “dazzle camouflage”, a dizzying black and white play of stripes which he applies to anything and everything, Rehberger has reinterpreted his own motif and the brand logo to create an artfully conceptual take for MCM bags. Concerning his design, Germany’s most prominent contemporary artist says: “This collection is about the history of MCM, how MCM has created a strong brand ID by making patterns that only consisted of logo repetitions all over a bag. I played around with that idea and reinterpreted it with a redesigned MCM logo rendered in stripes. Instead of repeating the logo as a pattern, I decided to print only one big logo all over the bag.”
The brand itself has always been about being flashy and ostentatious, but with this limited collection which was launched at Art Basel this year, you can still dazzle — but on a more discreet note, with the golden plaques and studs off on holiday. A passing glance at the wallets, backpacks and totes and you may dismiss it for a couple of stripes, but upon a closer inspection, the stripes do indeed form the letters MCM.
