Sneaking up

While shoes can make or break an outfit, one of the latest weird but convenient developments in fashion has seen super-formal numbers being mixed with uber-casual pieces. Think three-piece suits paired with Yeezy low-rises, or skirts with Converse sneakers. For the sake of comfort and the faddish trend of sports luxe, today’s fashionistas can pretty much get away with pairing sneakers with anything.

Of course, even in the sneaker world, some sneakers can score more points on the fashionable and aesthetics barometer than others. The comfy and fuss-free factor is surely the selling point for slipping into sneakers instead of high-heels in the first place. But conversely, wearing a really snazzy pair of sneakers can also bring some jazz to a plain outfit. If your outfit requires you to be a tad more dressed-up, it really is fail-proof to grab a pair of sneaks a tad more fancy than your Chuck Taylors (even if that will already do) — be it a body made of leather, lace details, excessive buckles or rhinestone studs. Even if not adorned or made with luxurious materials, another way is to pick a pair with many different textures or colours.

Louboutin really knows how to make things pop, with this season’s party-ready hot-yellow sneaker with hand-beaded weaving and geometrical patterns. Luckily, other luxury shoe authorities are rolling out more casual kicks we can literally run around in.

This season, Roger Vivier extends their legendary buckle emblem to slip-ons “Sneaky Viv”, thus marking their very first sneaker collection. The skateboarder icon creates a striking contrast, its casual spirit crossed with the extreme sophistication of the Pilgrim buckle. Made with baguette-shaped crystals, this buckle usually found on towering heels and feminine flats makes it easier to bring the jewelled shoe out on the street during the day.

Those who fancy high-tops should like Ash, an Italian newcomer that’s part of Central’s empire. A must-have is their signature Virgin sneaker: made of Nappa leather, with lots of strap and buckle detailing. This versatile hit goes with everything, but for a little more pizazz, their spring/summer collection offers new colours, and materials that are lighter than before. The golden hue and studs are a key look, but there are also wedge sneakers that come in a pop of bright, eye-catching colours.
