Time to tackle crow’s feet

Conspicuous crow’s feet, dark circles and crepey skin reveal your age and you can’t constantly avoid eye contact so people don’t see them.

Thin and delicate skin calls for a proper skincare routine that helps delay or tackle the multiple signs of ageing. Merely smoothing on a rich cream may not be enough, with cosmetic junkies layering more treatments on the eye zone.

“The layering that has been popular in skincare is now coming to the eye area. Serums layered underneath eye creams reap multiple benefits, from hydration to toning, to lifting and firming. Similar to a face regime, layering is a more sophisticated technique that will yield better results, faster,” said Joanna Czech, La Mer global skincare adviser.

In mid-May, La Mer will be launching The Lifting Eye Serum developed specifically for the layering underneath its eye gel, cream or balm.

The American brand is notable for using sea-derived ingredients, with the new eye serum featuring the signature Miracle Broth (biofermented sea kelp); the Uplifting Ferment combines perennial brown algae and copper-rich blue algae; and the Stretch Matrix Complex is made with red algae.

Its dual-sided applicator is designed with a rounded end to enhance microcirculation and “flat iron” side to sweep the eye upward, for a lifting effect.

“Apply the serum underneath the eye, from the inner to the outer corner. Then go between the eyelid and brow. Finish with a touch on the eyelid. This sweeping motion will help the matrix of ingredients better support the eye and brow like a lifting net,” Czech said.

Specifically fighting sagging brows, her massage technique is to hold the finger for a few seconds on the brow bone, at a 45-degree angle in the direction requiring the lifting, then repetitively using press-release motions underneath the brow. At the base of the brow above the nose, use thumb and index finger to lightly grab and press the skin.

Stubborn crow’s feet may also look softer with a light massage using the press-release motion directly on the fine lines in an upward motion.

“There are usually always one or two lines that are deepest, and you can gently press your finger into them, and hold for a few seconds before releasing to impact them more deeply,” she said.

The eye massage can be carried out at home on a daily basis whereas the Eye on Youth (2,000 baht) is a professional treatment available at the La Mer Boutique, at Groove@CentralWorld.

Czech emphasises that we should be tender when touching the skin around the eyes.

“Most people use too much force and pull the eye area,” she explained. “Friction brings blood to the surface of the skin, and creates increased darkness underneath the eyes. We can do a lot to lift, de-puff and soothe the eye area, but being gentle is most important.”
