Blue is the warmest colour — referencing the English title of Julie Maroh’s graphic novel about a lesbian romance between Clementine and the blue-haired Emma, which was adapted into an award-winning movie.

Likewise, blue is currently the cosmetic industry’s hottest hue although it’s theoretically defined as a cool colour. Not only splashed in make-up, variations appear in skincare products and fragrances, particularly summer’s refreshing formulas.
The spectrum is inspired by all sorts of things, from azure sky and faded denim to singer Halsey and mundane household products.
Hence a window cleaner may be mistaken for Fresh Couture — another wacky product concept that follows bottling a fragrance in a cute teddy bear donning a T-shirt saying: “This is not a Moschino toy.”
Once spritzing the right bottle, the blue-coloured fragrance bursts open with sparkling top notes of mandarin and bergamot enriched with exotic ylang ylang.
The Time R Aqua lotion is a limited edition to mark IPSA’s 30th anniversary. A blue flame is hotter than its red counterpart, explained the Japanese brand, who relates the colour to strong energy that drives the performance of the hydrating product.
South Korean brand, Neogen Code 9, combines skin hydrators with brighteners in White Sparkling Cream — a light-blue cooling gel for thirsty skin to regain the dewy K-Beauty look.
Men can equally pamper and purify their skin with Lab Series Urban Blue Detox Clay Mask, whose hydrating ingredient includes an extract from blue agave or tequila agave which also gives the base ingredient for the Mexican alcoholic drink. Layering on the electric blue mask though may have users looking like a character from the Avatar film during the five to 10 minutes of intensive treatment.
Adding another step to the grooming routine, Origins proposes spritzing a primer prior to slapping on the mask, with Maskimizer the first in this new cosmetic category. Presented in a marine blue bottle, the priming mist is claimed to improve the spreadability and removal of the clay mask while hydrating the skin.
As for make-up, blue rules as a summer-it shade. The Dior summer 2016 look dresses eyes in a vibrant blue and turquoise from the limited edition Five Couleurs Polka Dots eyeshadow palette. Matching nails boast an azure blue punctuated with nude beige created with a dotting tool that comes in a playful manicure kit from Dior’s Milky Dot collection.
A pale and dark blue meet up with pink and browns to reflect the harmony of the earth and the sky in YSL Beaute Savage Escape couture eyeshadow palette in a compact reminiscent of suede and the colour of sun-bleached jeans.
Lips don’t miss out on the season’s rage for blue either. The box in light blue, Halsey lipstick is in a matt grey — an interpretation of the singer’s trademark colour. The collaboration with MAC is a part of the Future Forward series that involves various female artists creating a limited-edition.
Even though Halsey has ditched edgy blue tresses but still her song, Colors, says that everything is blue — pretty much like the latest additions to the summer beauty bag.
