Mark your calendars because the season where parlours give ice cream out for free is here! No need to scream for ice cream, but be prepared to run for it tomorrow for a free scoop. American chain Cold Stone, famous for their ice cream mix-in, will be celebrating their “Free Ice Cream Day” tomorrow, from 1pm onwards. Customers can choose between a scoop of Chocolate Devotion or Strawberry Blonde at every branch across the country, with the exception of Suvarnabhumi airport. Hop to it though, because they’re only giving out 355 cones per branch! The brand has arrived on our hot shores for six years and to celebrate that, there’s also a 20% discount on all ice cream until the end of July.
Ben & Jerry’s Thailand
Another massive line the city should get ready for is the opening of Ben & Jerry’s first ice cream parlour in Bangkok. Yes, it may already be available as pints in the supermarket, but what’s worth getting excited about is enjoying your quintessentially American flavours, such as Cherry Garcia, along with other sides such as their famous brownies. In exactly a month’s time, the parlour will be open across from the Krispy Kreme store in Siam Paragon, offering much of the same choice as their outlets abroad. We’re happy to welcome this import with open arms, but can’t help but wish they came a little sooner before the cold treats market in Thailand became so saturated — especially with stiff competition from Korea’s shaved ice bingsus.
While Ben & Jerry’s is not as hippie and cultish as Boston’s Emack & Bolio which opened up late 2014, it may be more suited for the Thai palate, which is not so used to heavy and extremely creamy textures. A stop to Emack and Bolio’s is almost like a meal in itself, with their ceremoniously decorative cones and very rich flavours, but Ben & Jerry’s is an affair a tad more mass-market and easy on the sugar. You can take a sneak peek of the flavours’ formulas on G floor of Paragon from now until July 6, but find out for yourself what you think on July 9, where they will be offering free ice cream for the whole day. The newest creamery does have a free cone day too, which usually takes place during April everywhere around the world, but they’re pulling some strings to push that date down with their latest store opening in Bangkok.
Technically, it’s July which is considered the National Ice Cream Month in the US, with the third Sunday of the month the official National Ice Cream Day. Apparently, more than 90% of Americans like and regularly eat ice cream more than any other country in the world, but who can blame them — their country produces some of the best!
