DJ Krush — a Japanese hip hop innovator — will make a comeback after his previous sell out show in Bangkok in 2012. This time “DJ Krush Butterfly Effect Album Tour” will take place this Saturday and is indeed another music event serious beat enthusiasts should not miss.

DJ Krush Butterfly Effect Album Tour.

Born in 1962 in Tokyo, DJ Krush, whose real name is Hideaki Ishi, is a much respected influencer on the underground scene. Inspired by the 1983 American hip hop film Wild Style, he taught himself how to DJ and dropped his first gig in 1987. DJ Krush made a big buzz as being the first Japanese DJ to use turntables as live instruments and play on stage with a live band.

Although the turntable wizard doesn’t identify his music with any particular genre, his style is often labelled as instrumental hip hop, with a collision of various elements. He pulls together records with new sounds, old samplings and occasionally with traditional instruments to create genre-defying eclectic vibes — taking hip hop to the whole next level.

Now with a career spanning over 20 years, the 53-year-old is seasoned with an unrivalled approach to making his trademark abstract sounds and is still one of the biggest and most accomplished underground artists in the industry.

The veteran producer has unleashed altogether 11 full-length albums, earning rave reviews from music critics and has been well received by fans — not only in Japan but across the globe. He has also collaborated with the likes of The Root’s Black Thought, Sly and Robbie, DJ Shadow, Ryuichi Sakamato, Tashinori Kondo, DJ Yas among others.

Having performed in 313 cities worldwide, including the Bangkok shindig in 2012, DJ Krush will return this time to showcase his first full-length album in over a decade, Butterfly Effect, with tunes ranging from bass-heavy dub to atmospheric exploration.

Opening the soirée are Bangkok’s sound selectors DJ Dragon, Boogie G, nolens.volens, Sweed & Bunnyman, Dujada, Gramaphone Children, Space 360 and Spacetelex.
