Choked Up

Chokers have made a huge comeback in the past year, and it’s important to now realise that they come in way more shapes and forms than a flimsy little plastic braid. We’re giving you six distinct ways to embrace chokers in 2016.

Playing with Pendants

From those plastic tattoo-like chokers that were a rite of passage for 90s children to Victorian-styled velvet straps, one way to play these basic accessories up is to accessorise them with pendants. Monogram, feather and eyeball charms have been popular among choker-lovers for a while now, but one up-and-coming choker pendant we’ve noticed are mystic crystals. If you’re serious about crystals, you might have visited a real mystic in Old Town, otherwise imitation charms are everywhere on the delightfully affordable marketspace of Instagram.

Allusions to Other Accessories

Excuse our excitement, but it’s a frikkin’ itty bitty bowtie! Could a choker be any cuter? There goes the sound of me “proceeding to checkout” and quickly keying in my credit card number. But not to worry. This adorable little suede bowtie choker is from Pomelo and probably won’t even be felt by a bank account that has suffered much worse losses upon 3am online shopping sprees. If you’re into chokers pretending to be other kinds of accessories, also check out a simple belt buckle choker we spotted on alt boutique dollskill.com.

Stoned and High (Priced)

If you think chokers are exclusively inexpensive and informal, shame on you for being so naive. Haven’t you realised how easy it is to make anything expensive? Just make it out of precious materials and voila, a trend that can finally include sophisticated, rich folks. Jokes aside, luxurious chokers are mesmerising and an edgy direction to take when accessorising for gala events, and you don’t even have to look far for them. Bangkok-based online boutique Haus of Jewelry has a few chokers featuring minerals like moonstone, rose quartz and marble that will make you cry if you misplace them.

Dangerous Woman

Of course, when we talk about chokers we can’t avoid the topic of goth fashion and BDSM innuendos. A huge trend by itself is the brazen “O” ring choker. You may be inclined to dismiss this look for yourself right away, but hear this out: “O” ring chokers and other metal-and-leather-combo accessories don’t necessarily make you a gothic slut. They more accurately serve to turn a “safe” look into one with deliberate style and even looks great without heavy makeup. Give it a try, gals. Plus, once you’ve found one, you’re likely to have colour options of more than just black.

Barely There

For those of you who absolutely can’t deal with having a thick strap hugging your necks, there’s a choker trend that avoids the sensation and perception. It’s the wrap choker, a long thin strand of suede or a similar material you can wrap around your neck as many times as you want and as loosely as you want. Another minimalistic interpretation of choker are open circles — thin and pliable metallic collars that magically cling on without having to close the loop.

Big Romantic Gestures

You’d think that the larger the chokers, the more hardcore they’d appear — like you’d probably need to be Lisbeth Salander to pull them off. But the largest choker we’ve come across actually seems more suited to Jane Austen’s female characters, if you catch our literary drift. We assume corsage chokers have come about in one of two ways. They either started from floral headbands that were pulled down or a radical prom date who insisted on wearing the corsage on her choker. Either way, corsage chokers are drop dead gorgeous and one way to vamp up your datenight look so your bf will actually notice. Like “hey, look at this huge bouquet on my neck.” g
